Categorization by Deployment Architecture: Hyper-Converged vs. Disaggregated
Beyond the delivery model, the market can also be typed by the underlying deployment architecture. The most common architecture is hyper-converged. As the name suggests, this is where the compute (hypervisor) and storage (Server SAN software) functions are converged and run on the same physical server nodes. This creates a highly efficient and tightly integrated building block. Compact, ruggedized, and easily managed 2- or 3-node Server SAN clusters are being designed specifically for these environments, extending the power of software-defined storage out of the central data center and to the very edge of the business.
Market Types by Underlying Software Platform and Hypervisor
Finally, the market is often typed and understood through the lens of the underlying software platform and its associated hypervisor ecosystem, as this is a key technical and strategic differentiator. The VMware ecosystem type, centered around its vSAN product, is the market leader. This type is defined by its deep integration with the vSphere hypervisor. Its target market is the vast installed base of VMware customers, and its primary value is providing a seamless, integrated storage experience within a familiar management framework. The Nutanix ecosystem type offers a more open and flexible alternative. While it has its own built-in hypervisor (AHV), its platform is designed to be multi-hypervisor and multi-cloud. This type appeals to customers who want to avoid hypervisor lock-in or are looking for a unified platform to manage workloads across different environments, including on-premises and public clouds. The Microsoft ecosystem type, based on Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) and Hyper-V, is a powerful option for Windows-centric organizations. Its primary appeal is the cost-effectiveness and convenience of having a robust Server SAN capability built directly into the server operating system they are already using. The open-source type, represented by platforms like Ceph, is characterized by its massive scalability, flexibility, and lack of licensing costs. It is the preferred choice for large cloud service providers and organizations with deep technical expertise who require a highly customizable, open platform.
