Best Academic Study Strategies for University Students

University study can become overwhelming surprisingly quickly. One week you are keeping up with lectures and readings; the next, you have an exam coming up, an assignment to finish and several chapters you have barely opened.

When that happens, the obvious response is often to study for longer. But spending more time at your desk does not automatically mean you are learning more.

A better approach is to change how you study. Techniques such as retrieval practice, spaced study, active learning and deliberate problem-solving have considerably more value than simply reading the same material again and again. Research in learning science supports this shift, while recent research also highlights the importance of sleep and sustainable study habits.

Here are the study strategies I would prioritise if the goal is to understand university material, remember it for longer and perform better in assessments.

1. Test yourself instead of constantly rereading

Rereading your notes can create a strange feeling of familiarity. You look at a definition and think, "I know this."

But can you explain it without looking?

That is the more useful test.

Active recall means deliberately trying to retrieve information from memory rather than simply exposing yourself to it again. You can use it with almost any subject.

After studying a topic, close your book and try this:

  1. Write down everything you remember.

  2. Explain the main concept in your own words.

  3. List the important terms or theories.

  4. Try to answer questions without checking your notes.

  5. Open your notes and identify what you missed.

  6. Return to those weak areas and test yourself again.

Practice testing has strong support in learning research. A large review of learning techniques found that practice testing and distributed practice were among the more useful approaches examined, whereas techniques such as simply highlighting or rereading were less consistently effective.

The important distinction is simple: don't just look at the answer try to produce it first.

2. Spread your studying across several days

Cramming can be useful when you have left everything until the last minute, but it is a poor long-term strategy.

If you have three weeks before an exam, there is little reason to study the entire syllabus in one enormous session during the final weekend. Break the material into smaller sessions and return to it repeatedly.

This is known as spaced practice.

For example:

  • Monday: Learn Topic 1.

  • Wednesday: Recall Topic 1 without notes.

  • Friday: Practise questions on Topic 1.

  • Following Tuesday: Review the difficult parts.

  • The next week: Test yourself again.

The gaps between sessions matter. They force you to retrieve information after some forgetting has occurred, rather than relying on short-term familiarity.

A major review of distributed-practice research found that the spacing of study sessions can influence later retention. The exact ideal interval varies according to factors such as how long you need to remember the material and how much time you have available, so there is no single magic revision schedule.

The practical lesson is easier to remember: study earlier, return often and avoid putting everything into one final session.

3. Turn your notes into questions

Good university notes should help you study later. They should not simply record everything the lecturer says.

One easy improvement is to turn headings and important points into questions.

Instead of writing:

Causes of inflation

write:

What are the main causes of inflation, and how does each one affect prices?

Instead of:

Maslow's hierarchy of needs

ask:

What is Maslow's hierarchy, and what assumptions does the theory make about human motivation?

Questions give you something to retrieve.

The Cornell note-taking system is one established way of organising notes around cues, main notes and summaries. Cornell University's Learning Strategies Center also recommends reviewing and actively working with notes rather than treating note-taking as the end of the learning process.

The approach doesn't need to be complicated. Even a normal notebook can work if your notes eventually become questions you can answer without looking at the page.

4. Practise applying what you have learned

Knowing a definition is useful. Knowing when and how to use it is much more important.

This becomes particularly obvious in subjects involving calculations, case studies, scientific problems, programming, economics, accounting or technical procedures.

Suppose you have just studied a worked example. Don't immediately move on to the next page.

Cover the solution and attempt a similar problem yourself.

If you get stuck, find the exact step that caused the problem. Look at the relevant part of the solution, close it again and finish the problem independently.

Then try another question that changes the circumstances slightly.

This process helps you move from recognition to application. It also exposes gaps that passive reading can hide.

For exam preparation, practice questions are especially useful because they make you retrieve information while also showing you whether you can apply it under assessment conditions.

5. Mix different types of questions

Once you understand the fundamentals, avoid making every practice question identical.

Try interleaving instead.

Imagine you are studying mathematics. Rather than completing 30 questions on one technique before moving to another, mix several types of problems.

The same idea can work in other subjects. A business student might alternate between case analysis, calculations and short-answer questions. A psychology student might move between theories, research methods and application questions.

The benefit is that you have to decide what approach is appropriate before you begin.

That is closer to what happens in a real exam.

Interleaving can also make studying feel more difficult. Don't mistake that difficulty for failure. If you have to stop and think about which method or concept applies, you may be doing more useful mental work than when you are simply repeating the same exercise.

6. Make your lectures part of your study routine

Studying does not begin when you open your laptop at home.

You can make later revision much easier by preparing before lectures and actively processing the material during them.

Before class, spend a few minutes looking at the topic. Note unfamiliar terms or questions you want answered.

During the lecture, concentrate on the explanation rather than attempting to write down every sentence. Record key ideas, examples and connections.

Afterwards, spend a few minutes asking yourself what you actually remember.

This matters because active learning has been associated with better performance in university science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses. A widely cited meta-analysis of 225 studies found that students taught through active-learning approaches performed better on average than students taught through traditional lecture-only approaches.

You do not need to turn every lecture into a group activity. Even answering questions, solving problems, explaining concepts or making predictions can make your study more active.

7. Plan your week before it gets busy

A study timetable is only useful if you can realistically follow it.

Start with your deadlines rather than randomly filling empty spaces in a calendar.

Write down:

  • upcoming exams

  • assignment deadlines

  • presentations

  • reading requirements

  • practical work

  • other fixed commitments

Then identify which tasks need attention first.

A useful study block should have a clear purpose. "Study economics" is vague. "Complete questions 1–10 from Chapter 4" is much easier to start.

I would also avoid filling every available hour. University life rarely follows a perfect schedule. Leave some room for unexpected work, rest and other responsibilities.

The aim is not to build the most impressive timetable. It is to build one you can still follow when the week becomes difficult.

8. Stop treating sleep as wasted study time

There is a temptation to sacrifice sleep when an exam or deadline is approaching.

Sometimes students even feel guilty about going to bed because they believe they should be studying instead.

That can be counterproductive.

Research has repeatedly examined the relationship between sleep and academic performance among university students. A 2020 systematic review covering 30 studies concluded that inadequate sleep was associated with poorer academic performance.

More recently, a 2026 meta-analysis examined 59 articles involving more than 163,000 participants and reported a modest positive relationship between sleep quality and academic performance. It also found a positive association between sleep duration and academic performance.

That does not mean sleeping longer will automatically produce higher grades. Academic performance has many causes, and much of the sleep research is observational.

It does mean that regularly sacrificing sleep for extra hours of exhausted studying is not a particularly convincing strategy.

If you have an important exam tomorrow, getting reasonable sleep may be a better choice than spending the entire night rereading material you are struggling to concentrate on.

9. Use study timers as a tool, not a rule

The Pomodoro technique and similar approaches are popular for a reason: starting a difficult task is often harder than continuing one.

A timer can give you a clear starting point.

Try setting aside a focused period in which you:

  • put your phone away

  • close unnecessary browser tabs

  • choose one specific task

  • work without switching between unrelated activities

  • take a proper break afterwards

You don't have to follow a rigid 25-minute formula.

Some tasks are easy to complete in a short block. Others require more concentration. If you are writing an argument or working through a complicated technical problem, constantly stopping because a timer has gone off may actually interrupt your thinking.

Use the timer to protect your attention, not to dictate every minute of your day.

10. Explain difficult ideas without looking at your notes

Here's a simple test for understanding.

Pretend a classmate has never studied the topic before. Explain it to them.

If you can describe the idea clearly, give an example and explain why it matters, your understanding is probably developing well.

If you find yourself repeating textbook language without knowing what it means, you have probably found something that needs more work.

This technique is especially useful before exams. Try explaining:

  • a theory

  • a process

  • a research finding

  • a historical event

  • a mathematical method

  • an argument from an academic source

Then ask yourself what questions a lecturer might ask next.

The goal isn't to sound clever. It is to find out whether you can make sense of the material without relying on the original wording.

11. Get help before the problem becomes serious

There is no prize for struggling silently for three weeks.

If you have tried several approaches and still cannot understand a topic, use the academic support available to you. Ask your lecturer or tutor a specific question. Visit office hours. Speak to your university's library or academic-skills team. Form a small study group with classmates.

The earlier you ask, the easier it usually is to fix a gap.

For assignment-related work, the same principle applies. If you need additional guidance with an HND assignment, resources such as hnd assignments may provide assignment-focused support. However, any external academic assistance should be used responsibly and in accordance with your university's academic-integrity rules. Your submitted work should remain your own.

Getting help should make you more capable, not remove the need for you to understand the subject.

12. End every study session by deciding what happens next

One of the simplest habits you can develop is a short review at the end of each session.

Before putting your books away, ask yourself:

What can I remember?

What can I explain?

Where did I struggle?

What should I practise next?

When will I review this again?

That last question is easy to overlook.

If you finish a chapter thinking, "I'll revise this later," there is a good chance it will disappear beneath your other coursework.

Instead, put the next review into your calendar.

Even five minutes of planning can prevent a lot of last-minute stress.

A practical study routine for university students

You do not need to use every technique described above immediately.

Start with a straightforward routine:

Before class

Read the basic material and write down anything you don't understand.

During class

Listen for explanations, examples and connections. Take notes that will make sense when you return to them later.

After class

Close your notes and recall the main ideas from memory.

During the week

Use practice questions, problem-solving and short review sessions to reinforce the material.

Before the exam

Mix topics, complete practice questions and test yourself under realistic conditions.

Throughout the semester

Protect your sleep, keep track of deadlines and ask for help when a problem appears rather than waiting until the final week.

The most effective study strategy is the one you can sustain

There is no single technique that will suddenly make university easy.

Different subjects require different approaches. Memorising terminology is not the same as learning calculus. Preparing for a literature essay is not the same as preparing for a chemistry exam.

But the underlying principle remains useful: make your brain do the work.

Instead of repeatedly reading a chapter, retrieve it. Instead of only watching someone solve a problem, solve one yourself. Instead of cramming the night before an exam, return to the material across several weeks. Instead of sacrificing sleep every time your workload increases, build a routine that you can maintain.
