One of the first specifications to examine is the wavelength, which is measured in nanometers (nm). Wavelength determines the type of light emitted by the LEDs.

Be cautious about products that claim to be extremely powerful without explaining their actual output.

Another specification worth checking is fluence, or radiant dose. It describes the amount of energy delivered per unit area, commonly expressed in J/cm².

More light does not automatically mean better results. PBM can have a dose-dependent response, meaning the amount of light and treatment duration both matter. Research emphasizes the importance of considering irradiance, fluence, wavelength, and treatment time together.

Choose a pad with clear instructions rather than one that simply promotes high power.

4. Consider the Coverage Area

The size of the pad should match your intended use. A compact pad may work well for a smaller area, while a larger flexible pad can cover regions such as the back, abdomen, legs, or shoulders.

Check the product dimensions before buying. Good coverage can make treatments more convenient because you may not need to repeatedly reposition the device.

5. Prioritize Comfort and Flexibility

Consistency is important when using any home wellness device, so comfort should not be overlooked. Look for flexible materials, adjustable straps, lightweight construction, and controls that are simple to operate.

A flexible red light therapy pad can be particularly useful because it can conform more closely to the body's contours than a rigid panel. A comfortable design may also make it easier to follow the manufacturer's recommended treatment schedule.

Light-based devices can potentially affect the eyes, so follow the manufacturer's guidance regarding eye protection and positioning. The FDA notes that light-based procedures can cause eye injury and emphasizes appropriate protection when necessary.

If you have a medical condition, take photosensitizing medication, or have concerns about using light therapy, consult an appropriate healthcare professional before treatment.

7. Research the Manufacturer

A trustworthy manufacturer should provide detailed information about its product rather than relying entirely on advertising language.

Look for published research, clearly stated wavelengths, irradiance measurements, treatment instructions, warranty information, and transparent safety documentation. Independent research is especially useful because studies of home PBM devices have found considerable differences in wavelengths, output power, irradiance, and other performance characteristics.

If a company makes dramatic health claims but provides little technical or scientific information, consider that a warning sign.

8. Consider Regulatory Information

Depending on where you live and how a device is marketed, regulatory information can provide another useful point of comparison. In the United States, some medical PBM devices go through the FDA's 510(k) pathway. The FDA has specific guidance covering premarket submissions for certain PBM devices.

Keep in mind that regulatory status does not automatically mean a device is the best choice for every individual or every purpose. Always check what indication the clearance or authorization actually covers.
