Jio IPO GMP: What the Grey Market Premium Tells You and What It Does Not
Jio IPO GMP was reported around Rs 240 to Rs 255 near close. Learn what GMP means, how it is calculated and why it is unreliable.
GMP is the most searched number around any IPO, and the Jio IPO is no exception.
What GMP is
The grey market premium is the unofficial price at which IPO shares trade before they list. It is not regulated and not an official figure.
Reported levels
On the last day of bidding, trackers reported GMP of about Rs 240 to Rs 255 per share, or roughly 21 to 23 per cent above the upper band of Rs 1,119 . Earlier, on Day 1, it was around Rs 253 to Rs 277.
What it implies
Adding GMP to the upper band points to an indicative listing price of roughly Rs 1,360 to Rs 1,375. On one lot of 12 shares, that is a notional gain of about Rs 2,900 to Rs 3,100. This is arithmetic, not a forecast.
Why GMP can mislead
- It is unofficial and can be thin.
- It moves with market mood and can fall before listing.
- It cannot be traded or guaranteed.
- Past GMPs have not always matched listing prices.
How to use it sensibly
Treat GMP as a mood indicator. Base decisions on business quality and valuation, and use only money you can leave invested.
