Precision Placement: How Granular Insecticide and Nematicide Technologies Deliver Targeted Soil Protection

Walking through a cornfield at planting time, you might notice small granules falling into the seed furrow behind the planter. These Granular insecticide particles are a marvel of formulation science—designed to release their active ingredient precisely where root pests feed, at the right time, over weeks of crop development. Unlike broadcast sprays that disperse across the field, granular products place the chemical exactly where it is needed. Complementing these targeted insecticides are Nematicide products, which also benefit from granular formulations for soil-dwelling nematode control. Understanding how granular formulations work—and how they integrate with nematicides—is essential for farmers seeking efficient, environmentally responsible pest control.

The Science of Granular Formulations

Granular insecticide consists of an active ingredient adsorbed onto or incorporated into a carrier particle. The carrier—often attapulgite clay, corncob grits, walnut shells, or sand—provides physical bulk for uniform application and controls release rate.

Key properties of granular formulations:

  • Particle size – Typically 0.5-2 mm diameter. Larger particles reduce dust but may bounce off soil; smaller particles improve coverage but increase drift potential.

  • Active ingredient loading – 1-20% by weight. Lower loadings are safer to handle but require higher application rates.

  • Release mechanism – Diffusion out of porous carriers, dissolution in soil water, or degradation of coated layers.

  • Attrition resistance – Granules must withstand handling, transport, and metering without breaking into dust.

The Granular insecticide market supplies products for in-furrow, T-band, and broadcast application. Each method requires specific granule properties: in-furrow products need high attrition resistance; broadcast products need even flow from spinner spreaders.

Why Granular for Soil Pests?

Granular insecticide products excel for soil pest control because they overcome the limitations of liquid sprays:

Penetration – Liquid sprays are absorbed by crop residue and surface soil, rarely reaching the root zone. Granules fall through residue and can be incorporated by rainfall or irrigation.

Persistence – The granule carrier protects the active ingredient from UV degradation and microbial breakdown. Slow release extends residual activity from days (for sprays) to weeks (for granules).

Safety – Closed handling systems for granular products reduce applicator exposure. Granules are not easily inhaled and do not create drift that could contaminate neighboring fields or water bodies.

Selectivity – Properly placed granules do not contact plant foliage, preserving beneficial insects that patrol leaves.

The Granular insecticide market notes that granular formulations are particularly valuable for corn rootworm control, where the pest's entire life cycle (except the adult beetle) occurs in soil.

Nematicide Delivery via Granules

Nematicide products are also formulated as granules, especially for soil-incorporated applications. Carbamate nematicides (carbofuran, aldicarb) and organophosphate nematicides (terbufos, fenamiphos) are commonly available as granules.

Advantages of granular nematicides:

  • Deep placement – Granules can be banded below the seed furrow, placing nematicide in the root zone where nematodes feed

  • Reduced fumigant exposure – Granular nematicides do not require the specialized application equipment and buffer zones of fumigants

  • Extended residual – Weeks to months of nematode suppression, compared to days for some liquid products

  • Lower volatility – Granules do not evaporate, eliminating inhalation risk

The Nematicide market supplies granular products for bananas (nematodes are a major constraint to production), citrus, pineapples, and vegetables. Application rates range from 5-50 pounds per acre, depending on active ingredient and pest pressure.
