Today's platforms are designed from the ground up to be open and extensible, with a comprehensive library of REST APIs that expose all of the system's data and functionality. This API layer is crucial, as no ERP system can exist in a vacuum. Businesses rely on a wide range of other specialized applications, from e-commerce platforms and CRM systems to marketing automation tools and banking software. The API-first architecture allows the Cloud ERP to act as the central hub in a "best-of-breed" technology stack, seamlessly exchanging data with these other systems in real-time. For example, when an order is placed on an e-commerce website, an API call can instantly create a sales order in the ERP, update inventory levels, and trigger the fulfillment process. This ability to easily integrate and automate processes across the entire enterprise technology landscape is a key source of operational efficiency and a hallmark of a truly modern ERP architecture, enabling the creation of a connected and intelligent enterprise that operates at digital speed.

Underpinning this entire software architecture is the powerful and highly scalable infrastructure of the public cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The vast majority of Cloud ERP vendors do not own their own data centers; instead, they build and run their applications on top of one of these hyperscale cloud platforms. This provides them with access to virtually unlimited computing power, global data center reach, and a vast array of advanced services for security, database management, and artificial intelligence. By leveraging this underlying infrastructure, Cloud ERP vendors can offer their customers a level of performance, reliability, and global presence that would be impossible to achieve on their own. This partnership with the hyperscalers allows the ERP vendors to focus on what they do best—building great business applications—while leaving the complex and capital-intensive task of managing the underlying infrastructure to the global experts. This layered architecture, with the ERP application running on top of a major public cloud, is the standard model for delivering the enterprise-grade performance and security that businesses demand from their most critical system, ensuring business continuity and supporting global operations with ease.
