Water-Based Printing Inks — Alkaline Solubilization and Drying Kinetics on Porous Substrates

Driven by strict environmental regulations and corporate sustainability mandates, water-based printing inks have become a primary choice for corrugated packaging, tissue paper, and sanitary products. By replacing volatile organic solvents with water as the primary carrier, these inks dramatically reduce VOC emissions, improve factory safety by eliminating fire hazards, and provide a healthier work environment for press operators. However, replacing organic solvents with water introduces significant thermodynamic and kinetic challenges.

The primary difficulty stems from water’s high latent heat of vaporization ($2260 \text{ kJ/kg}$) compared to common solvents like ethyl acetate ($427 \text{ kJ/kg}$). This means water requires significantly more energy to evaporate, which can slow down production lines if drying systems are inadequate. Additionally, water exhibits high surface tension ($72 \text{ mN/m}$), making it difficult to wet low-surface-energy films without the addition of specialized wetting agents and alcohol co-solvents.

Alkaline Solubilization Mechanism: To make water-based inks work on press, manufacturers utilize alkali-soluble acrylic resins. These polymers contain carboxylic acid groups that are neutralized with a volatile base, such as ammonia, causing the resin to dissolve completely in water:

$$\text{R-COOH} + \text{NH}_3 \longrightarrow \text{R-COO}^- + \text{NH}_4^+ \quad \text{(Water Soluble Matrix)}$$

[Liquid Ink in Press]: Resin Acid Groups + Ammonia ➔ Hydrophilic Ionic Dissolution
[Drying Phase on Web]: Ammonia Gas Evaporates ➔ Resin Reverts to Hydrophobic State ➔ Water-Resistant Print

As the ink prints and passes into the drying hood, the ammonia gas evaporates rapidly. This drops the pH of the ink film, causing the acrylic resin to revert to its insoluble, hydrophobic state, which provides excellent water and rub resistance to the finished product. Managing this pH balance is critical; if ammonia evaporates too quickly while still on the press rollers, the ink will dry prematurely, clogging anilox cells and requiring extensive downtime for cleanup.
